Dual-State, Dual-Sport ADV Tour Through Washington and Idaho BDR

I have a little different post for you.

We don't only set up epic tours and provide training so you can start exploring safely - we also ride ourselves. This time Jeff Jones and some buddies rode the Washington BDR and then the Idaho BDR back to back.

Jeff Jones is an integral part of the team near Vegas. Jeff helps to manage the fleet during the winter months for rentals, training, and our Southwest/Central America tours.

Enjoy some photos and a bit about the trip.

Jeff Jones Trip Report

Rider: Jeff Jones
Date(s): September 2-12, 2024
Route: Washington BDR (North to South) and Idaho BDR (South to North)

Washington BDR: North to South (September 2-7, 2024)

September 2, 2024 – The Journey Begins

Starting at the Canadian border, our group was filled with anticipation. The first leg took us through the lush forests of the Cascade Mountains, offering a breathtaking start to our adventure. The towering peaks and verdant valleys set the stage for what was to come.

Scenic Highlights

  • Cascade Mountains: Riding through the Cascade Range was a visual feast. The dense forests and mountain views were truly spectacular.

  • Lake Chelan: We paused at Lake Chelan, a pristine body of water that provided a perfect spot for a break.

Challenging Sections

  • Bethel Ridge: This section tested our technical skills with its rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas. Precise handling and balance were essential.
  • Umtanum Ridge: The rocky trails and steep inclines of Umtanum Ridge required careful navigation, making it one of the more challenging parts of the route.

Unique Experiences

  • Wildlife Encounters: Along the way, there are chances to spot deer, elk, and even a black bear, adding an element of excitement to our ride through these remote wilderness areas.
  • Historical Sites: Exploring old mining towns and historical landmarks provided a fascinating glimpse into Washington's past.

Idaho BDR: South to North (September 7-12, 2024)

September 7, 2024 – Entering Idaho's Wilderness

Crossing into Idaho, we were greeted with a contrasting yet equally exhilarating landscape. The route took us from the southern deserts near Nevada to the lush forests bordering Canada.

Scenic Highlights

  • Sawtooth Mountains: The rugged beauty of the Sawtooth Range, with its jagged peaks and alpine lakes, was a highlight of our trip.
  • Salmon River: Following the "River of No Return" through deep canyons and scenic valleys was an unforgettable experience.
  • Panhandle National Forests: Riding through dense forests and along pristine lakeshores provided a serene backdrop to our adventure.

Challenging Sections

  • Magruder Corridor: This section is described to be a very challenging section. We were prepared and excited to ride it. Unfortunately, due to wildfires we were unable to ride this part of the BDR.
  • Lolo Motorway: Navigating the historic trail with its narrow paths and steep drop-offs required concentration and skill.

Unique Experiences

  • Hot Springs: Taking a relaxing dip in one of Idaho's many natural hot springs was a much-needed respite.
  • Ghost Towns: Exploring abandoned mining towns gave us a glimpse into Idaho's frontier history.

Preparation Tips

Practice Makes Perfect

  • Skills to Master: Standing, sitting, mounting/dismounting on uneven ground, handling deep/loose gravel, and navigating tight switchbacks.
